The article deals with issues related to the formation of a unique architectural image of the city – the capital of the state, as one of the most important aspects of the nation´s self–determination, its symbol. Features and regularities of the formation and development of the architectural environment of the capital city are revealed by the example of Astana – the new capital of Kazakhstan. The article also identifies the historical, social, political, cultural and ethnic factors and conditions underlying the originality and uniqueness of the architectural and planning environment of Astana; analyzes the characteristics of the construction of three–dimensional structure and planning of the new capital. Describes the characteristic elements of the architectural environment of Astana, associated with the semantics of the capital status of the city and showing the vector of the strategic national development.
